Idea Generation Techniques For Your Ebook Business Part 1

By Neil Stafford

Here is a ‘to do’ list of seven quick and easy to implement tasks that will help you quickly expand your product development business.

Whatever your topic, niche or passion… sometimes learning from other market places can give you inspirational ideas!

Both Neil & I pay attention whenever we visit anywhere.

As you know I love the saying “Walk around with your head up and your eyes wide open because opportunities are presenting themselves all the time to you!”

Too many people walk around staring at the floor as if the weight of the world was on their shoulders.

Nothing is really worth worrying about, it’s fruitless… and actually, the things you don’t even consider will be the things that catch you out.

OK, back to the positive stuff.  We often have members ask us where we get our ideas from, so here are seven things to do to get inspiration and borrow a couple of ideas.

1.Visit a local exhibition

Go to an organised show, whether it’s collectibles, antiques, leisure, yesteryear rally, whatever is on in your area – and take your camera.  Shoot photos of exhibits that are attracting a crowd. Shoot photos of signs, booths and all types of exhibitors.

Collect any handouts, marketing documents, price lists, future exhibition schedules, and anything else that pertains to working or exhibiting at trade shows.  Also carry a booklet around and make general notes on your observations.

Begin a reference file of documents and photos of how to participate and create effective exhibits at trade shows. This reference library that you build will be your bible when you exhibit at tradeshows.

2. Go to your local car boot sale

Spend at least half a day at the largest car boot sales in your area, again take your camera.  Take time to discover the niches that the various dealers have carved out for themselves… speak to the sellers and get an insight into how passionate they are for their market.

Make a note of items that catch your eye, note how much they are being sold for, condition and any other key pieces of information.  Then when you get back home, research the items on eBay, see if anything is being sold and what it’s going for.

At the car boot sale take a look at what people are buying. Take pictures of interesting exhibits.

Did you know there is a market for antique telephones?

3. Take a walk around your local large Maplins or PC World

Find the largest high tech retail store, and spend a few hours there looking through the latest high tech offerings.

Look closely at computer accessories, video cameras, and computer networking technology. I did this just last week and was astounded at all the new gear – like ways to pipe my Sky and HD movies around the house!

All of these technologies have a learning curve and they are things that you can develop “How To ” products around.
